Challenge
In Kenya, the energy offtake from small solar generation projects (‘mini-grids’) averages just 40% of their total potential output, due to low energy demand. Such projects remain non-commercial and dependent on government / donor funding. The consequence is persistently low energy-access outside of cities and towns.
Services provided
VAI Capital and a consortium of engineering and non-profit organisations from Kenya and the United Kingdom are delivering a project funded by the UK Government, to integrate electric transport services into the design of solar mini-grid projects, to increase energy offtake. The project will also allow the creation of a new software tool for project developers and investors to identify mini-grid projects viable for inclusion of e-mobility.
Outcome
The project targets energy access for presently unserved users, including marginalised and disadvantaged groups. It aims to do so by rendering rural mini-grids investable commercially, and by providing new tools for developers to use to create bankable, transparent investment propositions.
